A 29-year-old person from Atalugama in Bandaragama has been arrested in connection to the death of the 9-year-old girl who was reported missing from the area.
The Police said the suspect has confessed to murdering the child, adding that he will be produced in court today.
They further said that according to the postmortem report the victim was not raped.
The child was reported missing by her parents as she had not returned home after visiting a shop close to her house on Friday (27).
The Bandaragama Police had launched investigations following which the child’s body had been recovered from a marshy land near her house the next day (28).
The Police said it is suspected that the girl was murdered elsewhere and brought to the site where the body was found.
Police teams investigating the incident had earlier revealed that the girl had faced an incident about 150 meters from her house where no CCTV cameras were available.
Further investigations have led to the arrest of a 29-year-old resident of the Atalugama area.
