The French government has issued international arrest warrants for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his brother and two senior Syrian government military officers, accusing them of committing crimes against humanity and using chemical weapons banned by the international community.

In addition to Assad, warrants have been issued for Assad’s brother Mahir and Syrian government army generals Ghashan Abbas and Bassam ap Hassan.

International civil rights organizations point out that in 2013, when the civil war in Syria broke out, the Syrian government forces attacked civilians using chemical weapons, on the instructions of President Assad.

Civil rights organizations have explained that a thousand civilians lost their lives in the Syrian city of Doram due to the chemical weapons attack. (AFP)
