The entomology team of the Medical Research Institute has succeeded in discovering a new species of mosquito increasing the biodiversity of Sri Lanka. Dissanaka Dissanayake of the Health Professionals Association says that the mosquito species has been reported from Mirigama and Kalutara areas in Sri Lanka.
Culex (lephoceraomyia) cintellus is currently reported in countries like Thailand and India. Whether or not this mosquito species is a disease carrier is still under research and has not been reported as a disease carrier in the world.
In addition to this, the same group also managed to discover a species of mosquito called culex near infula belonging to the genus culex. The mosquito is a species of mosquito very close to the mosquito species Culex infula, which transmits the malaria disease in India, and whether or not it is a vector in Sri Lanka is still under research and there is a high probability of the mosquito being a vector.
Recently, 03 new mosquito species were found by health entomology officers and 04 more mosquito species were confirmed in Sri Lanka and sent for genetic research. In recent times, with these new discoveries, there may be changes in the field of health in the field of entomology. (Lankadeepa)
