Sri Lankan athlete Nadeesha Ramanayake won the gold medal in the women’s 400m event of the Asian Athletics Championship yesterday (13th) in Bangkok, Thailand. Accordingly, Nadisha Ramanayake’s name will go down in history as the 8th Sri Lankan to win a gold medal in the Asian Athletics Championships.
Nadeesha managed to win the gold medal by recording a time of 52.61 seconds and that time is also her personal best. It also joins the records as the third-best performance of 400m Sri Lankan women athletes.
Sri Lanka’s last gold medal in the women’s 400m was Damayanthi Darsha at the 2000 Asian Championships. The record of that event is also in the possession of Damayanthi Darsha. Accordingly, Sri Lanka won a gold medal in the women’s 400m event after 23 years. (Divaina)
