For the first time, scientists have discovered a cave or cavern that extends into the interior of the Moon. It is said that these caves are about 100 meters deep. The discovery of these caves is important because scientists believe that one day in the future when astronauts settle on the moon, these caves can be used to establish permanent settlements inside the moon rather than on the surface.
Scientists say there are likely hundreds of other such caves that extend into the Moon’s interior. By building settlements in these undiscovered caves, it would be possible to protect the moon settlers from radiation and adverse space weather conditions.
Scientists Lorenzo Bruzzone and Leonardo Carrer of the University of Trento in Italy discovered the caves and mapped the moon with the help of radar technology. This cave is named as ‘Mare Tranquillitatis‘. The cave is said to be in a place composed of lunar rocks. In 1969, Apollo 11 landed near this cave with NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldern.
This cave is said to be a lava cavity millions or billions of years ago. Scientists explain that these caves were created by a tunnel where lava flowed up from the interior of the moon.
With the discovery of these ‘moon caves’ by Italian scientists, NASA scientists have also shown interest in it. (Daily Mail, Lankadeepa)
