The Water Supply and Drainage Board says that compared to the increase in electricity charges, water bill charges will definitely have to be increased in the future.
A spokesman for the board said that about 35% of the cost of water production and distribution is spent on electricity.
He also mentioned that this cost will increase with the new electricity tariff revision.
However, it is reported that the Water Supply and Drainage Board has not yet taken a decision regarding the increase in water charges.
There are nearly 30 lakh water consumers across the island. 92% of them are domestic water consumers. The remaining 8% are non-domestic customers.
Meanwhile, the Water Supply and Drainage Board says that non-payment of water bills has increased greatly. (Lankadeepa)
