According to the Department of Meteorology, the pressure depression in the South-East and adjacent South-West Bay of Bengal is about 455 km east of Trincomalee and is centred near latitude 8.1°N and longitude 85.3°E.
The department mentioned that it will gradually move westward and northwesterly until the evening of January 31st and then turn southward and southwesterly and cross the coast of Sri Lanka in the morning of February 01st, 2023.
Due to this, rain or thundershowers may occur from time to time in North, East, North Central and Uva provinces and in Matale Hambantota districts and there is a possibility of rain or thundershowers in other parts of the island in the evening or at night.
In Eastern, Uva and Central Provinces and in Polonnaruwa District, heavy rains of about 150 mm may occur in some places and in North-Western and Northern Provinces and in Anuradhapura District, heavy rains of more than 100 mm may occur in some places.
The Department of Meteorology urges individuals to take the required precautions to reduce the risks brought on by storm-related lightning and transient high winds.
