Today (June 11), the Department of Meteorology says that occasional rain or thunder may occur in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle and Matara districts. The department stated that some places in Sabaragamuwa province and Galle, Matara, Colombo and Kalutara districts may experience heavy rains of more than 50 mm, while in the North-West province, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts may experience several showers of rain.
In Uva province and Ampara and Batticaloa districts there may be scattered showers or thunderstorms during the evening or night. In the western slopes of the Central Highlands, in the Northern and North-Central Provinces, Hambantota, Puttalam and Trincomalee districts, occasional gusty winds of 40 to 45 km/h may occur.
The Department of Meteorology urges individuals to take the required precautions to reduce the risks brought on by storm-related lightning and transient high winds.
