The Ministry of Health has decided to withdraw three more components of the antibiotic drug ‘Co-amoxiclav‘, which is used for bacterial infections including respiratory diseases. The Ministry of Health says that this step has been taken after the medical supplies department recommended that this medicine, which has been withdrawn from use before, is inferior.
This antibiotic, which is commonly given in pediatric infections, is a product of a local company. The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) says that it has been sent to a research laboratory of the World Health Organization for further tests on the drug.
Dr Chamal Sanjeewa, President of the Doctors’ Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights, issued a press release yesterday (24) saying that the antibiotics produced by this company and given back to the Ministry of Health were found to be of inferior quality and were removed from use on the 15th.
