Former President of Taiwan Ma Ying-jeou visited China. There is a rift between China and Taiwan. China still considers Taiwan a part of China. Taiwan broke away from China and became an independent state after the Communist Revolution in 1949.
Since then, no Taiwanese leader or former leader has visited China. Accordingly, political analysts point out that this visit to China by the former president of Taiwan, President Ma Ying, is politically very important.
When he arrived at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, he received a very warm welcome from the Chinese authorities. Ma Ying served as the President of Taiwan from 2008 to 2016. (Reuters)
