President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the legal departments to draft strict laws to prevent child abuse. The President has given these instructions in view of the recent incidents of the death of a 16-year-old girl who jumped from the top floor of a Kalutara hotel, and the abuse of 16 children by a Kalutara support class teacher.
The President has pointed out the need to quickly suppress the ongoing child abuse by some teachers and elders as well as various sections of society and has emphasized the need for a legal system that provides severe punishment for such acts. President Ranil Wickramasinghe has also mentioned that a separate set of laws should be introduced to protect the children of the country. For that purpose, the President has pointed out the need to amend the existing laws and has informed to pay attention to the abuse of children using mobile phones, social media, etc. while preparing this legal system.
Accordingly, after the drafting of the relevant laws, they are to be submitted to the parliament promptly and adopted. The president has pointed out the need to make changes in the school curriculum and has also emphasized the need for a new dialogue and awareness program on parent-child relationships and mental health at home.
