NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are currently stranded on the International Space Station until February. They said they would cast their votes in the US presidential election on November 5, directly from space.
Williams, who is of Indian descent, called journalists on Friday afternoon to say the opportunity to vote in space was out of this world. “Voting is an important responsibility for all citizens, and I feel out of this world having this opportunity to vote from space,” she said.
The two of them, 58 and 61 years old, respectively, talked to the media from the ISS, where they have been living since June. It was a mission that was supposed to last an eight-day journey but was extended due to some technical issues with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which developed a few on-flight malfunctions and was not able to return to Earth in the allotted time.
