South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Russia, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and demanded an end to Russia’s military action against Ukraine. The South African president travelled to Russia accompanied by the heads of state of seven other African countries as peace envoys to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The peace delegation indicated to Russian President Putin that they can intervene to end the Russian war in Ukraine. “The war is over. It’s time to finish”. Ramaphosa pointed out to Putin that the crisis should be resolved through discussions and at a diplomatic level.
Foreign media have reported that the peace delegation including Ramaphosa went to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv last Friday (16) and held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia pursued military action against Ukraine in February 2022. That’s because Ukraine is seeking NATO membership. NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the war alliance formed by Western countries against Russia.
Meanwhile, American President Joe Biden recently pointed out that it is not easy for Ukraine to get NATO membership. (Reuters)
