District Health Services Director’s Office states that people should be concerned as there is an increase in the detection of leprosy patients in the Gampaha district.

District Epidemiologist Dr Nilangi Subhasekara stated that according to the tests carried out by the National Leprosy Control Unit and Gampaha District Health Services Director Dr Indika Wanninayake to identify the patients, about 130 leprosy patients have been identified in Gampaha district so far this year.

The epidemiologist stated that can be cured by early diagnosis of leprosy and receiving proper medical treatment. She also pointed out that if symptoms such as numbness and sores on the skin are showing, the necessary treatment should be obtained by referring to a dermatology clinic or a dermatology doctor.

She explained that if leprosy is not treated, it can even lead to an orthopaedic condition and it is very important to receive treatment at the initial stage and proper treatment can cure leprosy.
