President Ranil Wickramasinghe has submitted a nomination to the Constituent Assembly for the position of the new Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. A professor of Peradeniya University is said to have suggested this. The Constituent Assembly is scheduled to meet on the 26th and take a decision on this name proposal.
The Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission Janaka Ratnayake was recently removed from that position according to a resolution passed in the Parliament. Recently there was a conflict of opinion between Janaka Ratnayake and the Minister of Power and Energy. After that, the Finance Minister submitted a proposal to Parliament to remove Mr Ratnayake from that position.
The resolution against Janaka Ratnayake was passed by 46 majority votes in Parliament on May 24th. 123 votes were received in favour of the proposal and only 77 votes were received against it. Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Janata Vimukti Peramuna, Sukanda Janata Sabha, Uttar Lanka Coalition and the majority of members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party voted against the resolution. (Lankadeepa)
