At the 3rd International Rangasena Theater Festival held in Calcutta, India, Sri Lankan young dramatist Devinda Wickramasinghe received the ‘Ranga Natya Shastra’ special honour award and Pradeep Ramawickrama, who played the role of the lion in his play ‘Maa Ada Kumbai’, received a special award for his performance.
In this drama festival held in Calcutta, India from the 2nd to the 6th, dramatists from several countries including Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Italy presented the drama.
Devinda’s performance for Sri Lanka, ‘Maa Ada Kumbai’, is special in that only one actor performs for 30 minutes. The lion in the Sri Lankan national flag, a confession made by descending from it, is based on this play.
Devin, who is an external lecturer in drama and performing arts at Kelaniya University, won the best play at the 2015 National Youth Awards and received special recognition at the 2017 Raji Drama Festival. This is the first one-act play presented by Sri Lanka for the Ranga Sena International Drama Festival this year. (Lankadeepa)
