Steps have been taken to nominate two captains for Sri Lanka ‘A’ team named for the four-day and one-day tournament starting on January 31 under the England Lions cricket team’s tour of Sri Lanka ‘A’.
Nipun Dhananjaya has been named as the captain of Sri Lanka ‘A’ four-day team and Kamindu Mendis has been named as the captain of the one-day tournament.
In addition to Kamidu Mendis, who has won Test debuts, this team also includes Oshadha Fernando, Praveen Jayawickrama and Lasith Amudeniya. However, in addition to the named team of 22 players, the selection committee headed by Mr Pramodya Wickramasinghe has taken steps to announce a team of 14 players as part of the preparations for the Sri Lankan team’s tour of New Zealand.
Among them, an attacking opening batsman, Kusal Janith Perera, has also been named. Kusal, who suffered a shoulder injury after the Sri Lankan team’s T20 match against the West Indies team held in late 2021, did not participate in any active matches for the past few months. However, due to the fact that Kusal has fully recovered from his surgery, the selection committee has decided to give him a chance to open the doors to the national team again.
Meanwhile, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Chamika Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dunith Wellalage, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera, who have won Test mandates, are also included in the special squad named in the hope of being called up whenever required.
