International Women’s Day is today (March 08). Women’s Day is celebrated as an annual event recognized by the United Nations.

More than 100 years ago, in 1908, fifteen thousand women marched in New York City to demand shorter working hours, better wages and the right to vote.

A year later International Women’s Day was announced by the American Socialist Party. It received official recognition when it was celebrated by the United Nations in 1975.

The theme of this year’s Women’s Day is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. Information is being reported that all the arrangements are ready to hold the International Women’s Day national event this morning (08) under the chairmanship of the President and the Prime Minister at Battaramulla Waters Edge Premises.
