The Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is serving a prison sentence, has disappeared from the prison where he is being held, and the prison authorities are silent on the matter, Navalny’s lawyers have alleged.
Alexei Navalny, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison, was held in a Russian prison 150 miles from the capital Moscow. The lawyers say that Navalny is not in that prison at the moment and no one has informed them what happened to him.
Navalny, 47, a pro-Western man, has been convicted of a variety of charges. Navalny was also found guilty of conspiracy to overthrow the government. Political analysts point out that the reason for all that is that he is a challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin and incurs Putin’s wrath.
The Russian presidential election will be held in 2024. Putin has said that he will run for the presidency with the hope of continuing in power. Alexei Navalny has been missing since the day Putin officially announced his candidacy for the presidency. (AFP)
