Parliamentarian Dr Harsha de Silva has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the walking path at Independence Square in Colombo, urging relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent possible injuries to those using it.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated that the walking path, which was constructed during the tenure then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa around 15 years ago, has become a popular location for regular walkers due to its peaceful and well-maintained environment.
He noted that many people, including himself, regularly use the walking path for morning walks, describing the experience as peaceful and refreshing.
However, de Silva expressed concern over the current state of the walkway, stating that he had never seen it in such disrepair. He pointed out that protruding rocks along the path pose a danger, particularly to elderly pedestrians.
He also claimed that soil brought to repair the path has remained unused for months and called on Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar and the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to address the issue before a serious accident occurs.
