With heavy rains and strong winds, the violent cyclone named ‘Gabriel’ hit New Zealand. New Zealand media have reported that thousands of New Zealanders are currently suffering without electricity. Cyclone Gabriel came to New Zealand after passing Australia.
New Zealand meteorologists had worked to warn about the cyclone in advance. Auckland is also said to have been affected by the cyclone. Many roads in the city are flooded and roads are blocked due to fallen trees. The power supply has been disrupted.
The cyclone came with 200 mm of rain and strong winds of 130 km per hour. The country’s authorities had earlier advised city dwellers to move to safe places in anticipation of danger from the cyclone and floods. Residents of Auckland worked to collect enough food and drinking water for about three days, taking into account the early warnings of the cyclone.
Air New Zealand, the national airline of New Zealand, has cancelled its domestic flights due to the cyclone. (BBC)
