A senior officer attached to the Ministry of Justice has recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the alleged unlawful release of an inmate of the Anuradhapura Prison under the presidential pardon for Vesak Poya.
It has been reported that the statement was recorded after the officer was summoned to the CID.
Meanwhile, CID officers have been deployed to all 28 prisons across the country to investigate whether presidential pardons have been misused in the recent past to release inmates unlawfully.
Accordingly, relevant investigations have already commenced.
In connection with the unlawful release of an inmate from the Anuradhapura Prison, both the Superintendent of the Anuradhapura Prison and the Commissioner General of Prisons have been remanded at present.
