The Colombo High Court today fixed July 21, 2025, for the pre-trial conference in the case filed against three police officers attached to the Welikada Police in connection with the custodial death of a domestic worker in 2023.The case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge R.S.S. A total of 965 individuals have died in road accidents across the country this year.A total of 1,842 major accidents have occurred across the island between January 1 and May 13, Police stated.During that period, 902 fatal accidents were reported.According to Police, negligence, reckless driving and improper vehicle maintenance were the main causes of the accidents.Police have planned to implement a special program island-wide to minimize traffic accidents, and driver awareness programs are also scheduled to be implemented under the project.

Twelve individuals have been arrested by the Polonnaruwa Divisional Crimes Unit for allegedly aiding and abetting the sale of ammonia fertilizer falsely marketed as urea fertilizer at higher prices to farmers.The arrests were made during a raid carried out on May 13 at a Seed and Planting Material Sales Center in Siripura.
