Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne, who is currently in remand custody, was presented before the Bribery Commission today (03).Rajitha Senaratne was taken into custody on August 29 after appearing in court following an arrest warrant that had been issued against him.Following his court appearance, he was placed in remand custody until September 9.At the time, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama ordered prison authorities to present Senaratne before the Bribery Commission at 9:00 a.m. today to record a statement.

The Supreme Court has declared that the Hatharaliyadda Police violated the fundamental rights of a 16-year-old schoolboy and his mother, awarding compensation and issuing fresh directives to safeguard the rights of minors in custody.The court held that the Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Hatharaliyadda Police Station in 2022 tortured the teenager, who had been wrongfully arrested on suspicion of stealing jewellery, and further infringed his rights by detaining him unlawfully and failing to produce him before a magistrate within the time required by law.During court proceedings it had been revealed through medical evidence that the student sustained injuries after being beaten…

The United National Party has postponed its 79th anniversary celebration, which was scheduled for Saturday, September 6, citing the health condition of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorale said the decision was taken by the party’s management committee, which met in Colombo on Tuesday.She said the event will be rescheduled for later this month. Wildlife photographer Lakshitha Karunarathna has once again brought pride to Sri Lanka by being awarded at the world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) competition, organized by the Natural History Museum, London. The first coconut seed production unit in the Northern Province was inaugurated today (02) in Pallai under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, as part of the Northern Coconut Triangle Project.The initiative is being implemented as a collaborative programme between the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka and the Chilaw Plantations Company, the President’s Media Division.The government has planned to promote Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Mannar as the Northern Coconut Triangle.
