The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal to present in Parliament the amended regulations pertaining to seatbelt regulations for vehicles using expressways.The Motor Vehicles Directive (Expressway) No. 02 of 2011, formulated under the Motor Vehicle Act (Section 203 Authority), was amended through the Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2455/29 dated 25-09-2025 in order to minimize the deaths and severe injuries that have occurred due to the increase in accidents on the expressway.Therefore, wearing seat belts for all passengers traveling in vehicles using expressways has been made compulsory.Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Acting Minister…

The Supreme Court today (28) scheduled a date to hear the appeals filed against the sentences imposed on former Ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Nalin Fernando, who were convicted and sentenced by the Colombo High Court three-judge bench in connection with a corruption charge.Accordingly, the Supreme Court will hear the appeals on January 20, 2026, Ada Derana reporter said.The appeals were today called before a three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Prethi Padman Surasena.At the time the appeals were called, former ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Nalin Fernando, who are currently in custody, were produced before court by prison officials.

The Malaysian Coast Guard Ship ‘KM BENDAHARA’ arrived at the Port of Colombo on a replenishment purpose on 27 Oct 25. The visiting ship was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in compliance with time-honoured naval traditions.‘KM BENDAHARA’ is a 64.16m long Reliance Class – Medium Endurance Cutter which is manned by a crew of 50. Meanwhile, the ship is commanded by Commander (Maritime) MOHD FAHIMI BIN OMAR.During their stay in Sri Lanka, the crew will engage in sightseeing tours across the country. A Canadian national attempting to smuggle a stock of hashish valued at Rs. 182.5 million through the Green Channel at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, has been arrested by officials of the Customs Narcotics Control Division in the early hours of today.The suspect is a 21-year-old Canadian national, reportedly a student pursuing higher education.He had arrived from Dubai at midnight aboard a private airline.Upon inspection of his luggage, Customs officers discovered 18 kilograms and 253 grams of hashish, packed into 72 smaller packets hidden inside six large polythene packages.The arrested Canadian national and the seized stock of hashish were subsequently…
