In response to the ongoing adverse weather conditions, the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, has directed the Commander of 1 Corps and all Security Forces Commanders to keep troops on standby to provide immediate relief to those affected. Troops will also assist the relevant authorities in disaster management efforts.

Recently, the rising water level of the Diyawanna Lake posed a serious flood threat to the area surrounding the Parliament Complex. To mitigate this risk, troops from the 18 Sri Lanka National Guard were swiftly deployed to the area. Likewise, troops from the 9 Sri Lanka National Guard took action to prevent collapse at the Panala Jayawadana tank bund using sandbags, due to the increasing water levels.

Furthermore, with the Kelani River’s water level on the rise, troops from the 2 Sri Lanka Light Infantry were deployed to strengthen the Bomiriya canal bund in Kaduwela and another canal in Kohilawatta, Kelanimulla, by protecting them with sandbags to reduce the risk of flooding in these areas.
