After the military rebellion, Yevgeny Prigoshin, the head of Russia’s “Wagner” mercenary battalion, who was in exile in Belarus, has returned to St. Petersburg, Russia, according to foreign media. Foreign media reported this by quoting the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. The military coup, which was limited to 24 hours, ended on June 27 after Prigoshin went to Belarus. Belarus is one of Russia’s neighbours.
Prigozhin was brought to Belarus with the intervention of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko is a close friend of Prigoshin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While in exile in Belarus, the Russian government dismissed all charges against Prigozhin. The ‘Wagner’ mercenaries who joined the rebellion were also pardoned. Meanwhile, the Russian media has reported that the Russian government is working to conduct an investigation against Prigoshin on charges of treason. (Washington Post)
