Former cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga, chairman of the National Sports Council, said that the Sports Act was amended by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe to do justice to the 22 million people and not to 22 people.
Mr Arjuna Ranatunga further stated that some officials of sports associations in Sri Lanka have been working in their positions for a long period of time, and some of them were still in those positions when he was playing.
The Chairman of the National Sports Council recently visited the Malwatu Asgiri elders and explained the facts to them about the new Sports Act, and later expressed these views while addressing the media.
He further mentioned that people who are opposed to the Sports Act are people who depend on the positions of the sports associations and that a system should be developed to stop the officials from depending on the money that the players bring to the country. (Divaina)
