The Indian Space Agency has taken steps to name a newly discovered crater on the surface of Mars as ‘Lal’ in honour of Indian physicist Devendra Lal. Physicist Devendra Lal (1929-2012) was a renowned scientist. Devendra Lal was also one of the pioneers in establishing the Indian Space Agency in Ahmedabad. A 69 km diameter crater in the southern hemisphere of Mars was named after ‘Lal’.
In addition, the Indian Space Agency has taken steps to name two more craters, two northern Indian cities, ‘Muzran’ and ‘Hilsa’. India has sent a robotic probe into Mars orbit to explore Mars. This plane is called ‘Mangalyan’. Currently, Indian scientists are designing ‘Mangalyan 2’ to send it to Mars. Mangalyaan 2 is also said to be a Mars lander. (NDTV)
