Peradeniya University Professor of Geography Atula Senaratne says that the cause of the earthquakes in the Buttala area could be an earthquake in the Carlsberg mountain range at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
He said that according to international data, earthquakes are not recorded in the Buttala area and he said that a shock that happened in a mountain called Carlsberg Mount on the bottom of the sea may have been felt like this.
It is also reported that two teams of scientists have left for Monaragala and Buttala areas to investigate the earthquakes reported yesterday (10) and today (11).
