Health authorities say that listeriosis is a disease caused by a bacterium and it is not a disease that goes through a large-scale epidemic.
This is usually spread from one person to another through food, and the disease can spread when the food is exposed to the bacteria and eaten, said the chief epidemiologist of the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, specialist Dr Samitha Ginige.
The health department is asking people to be careful about the food and water they consume and it is not a medical condition that should cause undue fear that it will turn into an epidemic situation.
