Major supermarket environment has agreed with the Parliamentary Committee on Sectoral Oversight of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development to provide an allowance to customers who do not take polythene bags (shopping bags).
Accordingly, the superstore owners were called to the committee on the 21st to reach a final decision regarding the amount of allowance given, said its chairman, Gampaha District Member of Parliament Engineer Ajith Mannapperuma.
He also mentioned that the aim of implementing this program is to protect the environment by discouraging the use of polythene and plastic.
The shop owners were recently called to the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Natural Resources and Sustainable Development to decide on the polythene bags issued by the supermarkets. It was then that they came to this agreement.
