The Human Rights Watch organization says in a statement that the Anti-Terrorism Act proposed by the Sri Lankan government will give authority to the authorities to systematically violate basic human rights.
They insist that the government should withdraw the bill and ensure through consultation that any anti-terror bill upholds international human rights standards.
The statement added that instead of solving problems, the bill has broadened the definition of terrorism to include crimes such as property damage, theft or robbery, and restricted the right to freedom of assembly and speech.
