Scientists at the Japan Space Agency are preparing to send a small satellite made of wood into Earth’s orbit. This small satellite is a communication satellite. It will be sent into space called ‘Lignosat’ next September.
The construction of this wooden satellite started in 2020. Cherry, birch and magnolia wood have been used for this purpose. Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry have joined forces to create this wooden satellite as a solution to space debris that accumulates in space. Space debris is the metal parts of defunct satellites, rocket fragments, etc.
