The chairman Patali Champika Ranawaka says that it was revealed in the assembly of ways and means that the businessmen who imported big onions to Sri Lanka in the year 2023 have earned an illegal profit of about 8,000 crore rupees.

Accordingly, he pointed out that in 2023, a kilo of big onions imported at 92 rupees has been sold for 365 rupees in Orugudawatta, and when they reach the hands of the consumer, the price of a kilo will be close to 700 rupees.

Speaking in the Parliament, he further stated that potatoes were imported for 110 rupees but they were sold for 840 rupees, and the income of the few businessmen who imported those goods was approximately 8,000 crores, and those who made illegal profits were not taxed.
