A woman of Jewish origin became the first woman to hold the presidency of Mexico. The candidate for the presidency was Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who represented the ruling party, the ‘Morena’ party. Claudia is Jewish, and this is the first time that a Jewish woman holds the office of President of Mexico.
Not only the presidential election of Mexico but also the parliamentary general election was held on the second day. The results were released yesterday (3). The main political parties in Mexico are the ‘Morena’ party and the ‘PAN’ party. Bertha Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz contested the presidential election from the opposition political party ‘PAN’. As soon as it was confirmed that Claudia had won the majority of the vote, Galvezya conceded defeat and congratulated her.
Born in 1962, Claudia was a scientist before entering politics. She also served as the governor of Mexico City. That is from 2018 to 2023. Claudia ran for president this year as the successor to outgoing President Manuel Lopez. The term of office of the President of Mexico is 6 years.
Parliamentary elections were held to elect representatives for the 600 seats in the House of Representatives and 128 seats in the Upper House or Senate of the Mexican Parliament. (AFP)
