The Food Policy Committee recommended reducing the Special Commodity Levy (SCL) rate for large onions when it met on the 24th.
From September 22, 2022, the government has imposed a Special Commodity Levy (SCL) on one kilogram of imported onion at Rs. 10/- to Rs. With the increase to 50/-, the import of big onions had come down.
The national requirement for onion is about 300,000 metric tons per year and 86% of that requirement is met mainly through imports.
