The Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, has decided not to give approval for long-term travel abroad to officials working in the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Agricultural Development and all provincial agricultural institutions.

At the Provincial Agriculture Conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture, there was a long discussion regarding the departure of officials related to the agriculture sector. Those officers made a proposal to the Minister in charge of Provincial Agriculture not to give approval for long-term trips abroad, as the approval of the Minister of Agriculture is required for a trip abroad.

The ministry says that there are currently large vacancies in many positions such as agriculture advisors working in the agriculture sector and no recruitment has been done to fill those vacancies for many years.

The Minister of Agriculture informed all the agriculture authorities that this decision will be implemented until new recruitments are made for the currently vacant positions and that they should not forward the requests made by officials related to the agriculture sector for long-term trips abroad.
