It is reported that a core squad of 30 players including Kusal Janith Perera, Matheesha Pathirana, Lakshan Sandakan, and Dushan Hemantha has been named for the 2023 World Cup qualification tournament and for the one-day cricket tournament to be held against Afghanistan early next month.
Spinner Dushan Hemantha was also named in the squad for the last Test against Ireland and did not get a chance there. Fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been performing well in the Indian Premier League, representing Chennai Super Kings. Playing for Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 match against Afghanistan in August last year is his first and so far only international match experience.

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who has not had the opportunity to play any international match since the T20-20 World Cup held in Australia last year, has been called up for a Sri Lankan squad after about 8 months. Senior batsman Angelo Mathews has also reconfirmed his place in this squad which has been named under the leadership of Dasun Shanaka. Also, Nuwanidu Fernando, Ashen Bandara, Lasith Croospulle, Sahan Arachchige, Milan Ratnayake, and Nuwan Thushara have been called to the squad as new players and Lakshan Sandakan as a spinner has also been called to the squad.
The three-match one-day series against Afghanistan is scheduled to begin early next month, and the World Cup qualifying tournament will be held in Zimbabwe from the middle of next month to July 9. (Direct quote: Divaina)
