The depression in South West Bay of Bengal is located 370 km northeast of Trincomalee and this system is likely to cross Sri Lanka in the next 48 hours, says the Department of Meteorology.

Due to that, the meteorological department says that an increase in rain and wind conditions is expected in many parts of the island today and on the 24th, 25th and 26th of December.

Rains may occur in the North, East, North-Central and North-West provinces from time to time, and some places will receive above 100 mm. It is said that heavy rains may occur, and there may be scattered showers or thunderstorms in other areas during the evening or at night.

In North, East, North-West, West and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in Galle and Matara Districts, the winds are blowing from time to time. It is further reported that strong winds of 40-50 kmph may occur.
