An entirely vegan sneaker has been released by the Spanish company Rice, which makes sustainable footwear. The all-black “Open21” is constructed of recycled materials, organic cotton, vegan maize and apple leather, recycled plastic bottles, and actual rice grains; the outside sole has a discernible rice texture.

The insole of the shoe is composed of 55 % synthetic rubber, 30% recycled materials, and 15% Spanish rice trash. The outsole is made up of 45% recycled materials, 50% organic TPU, and 5% leftover rice.

The vegan “leather” used for the shoes is made of 20% polyester, 38% PU, 26% apple waste, and 16% organic cotton. 20% organic cotton, 33% PU, and 47% organic PU derived from maize make up the heel area.

The laces were made from two recycled plastic cups.

“The result is high-end footwear that combines tradition, Spanish craftsmanship and a cool look. The sneakers are made in the EU,” explained Rice in a press release.

The company was established in Barcelona in 2012, and its first outer sole was introduced there in 2017. The most recent collection is constructed entirely of recycled and ecological materials, including rice.

The vegan “Open21” shoe in “All Over Black” is now offered for about 140 euros on the websites of the brand (thericeco.com) and Thokk Thokk (thokkthokkmarket.com), a marketplace for ethically made, vegan, and environmentally friendly clothing.
