The Japanese embassy said that the resumption of currently suspended projects and the start of new projects, as well as the Japan light rail project, are dependent on the progress of debt restructuring negotiations.

The cabinet approved the resumption of the US$ 2.2 billion light rail system that was to be started under the financial facilities of the Japan International Cooperation Agency. This line is to be built connecting Malambe and Colombo Fort.

This project, which was decided to be started by the good governance government, was decided to be stopped by the government of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. During a recent visit to Japan, President Ranil Wickramasinghe proposed restarting this project. The Japanese Embassy has said that it will look into how to resume the currently suspended projects and how to start new projects while focusing on the debt restructuring process in Sri Lanka.
