The government has not yet obtained official Cabinet approval to increase the retirement age of judges within the judicial system, including those serving in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara said.

The Justice Minister made these remarks in Parliament today (11) while responding to questions raised by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.

Addressing the House, Minister Nanayakkara said that, in addition to judges, professionals from other sectors have also submitted requests seeking an increase in the retirement age.

He noted that the government is considering these requests positively, adding that while some of the appeals are reasonable, others appear to be politically motivated.

However, the Justice Minister emphasized that no official decision has yet been taken regarding the matter.
